It has become clear in the last few years that renewable is the way forward as not only does it preserve the world’s natural resources and help prevent global warming but it also can save you a large amount of money. Another good reason to use wood pellet it that it is a locally produced product which not only helps the local economy, but means that its price will stay at a stable rate as it is not depending on currency rates and agreements between other countries. At the current price of wood pellet it works out to be the equivalent in oil of24 pence per litre which is a large saving.
So the big question is why Biomass?
Well there are a large number of reasons:
·Fossil fuel prices are increasing dramatically
·Government levies are increasing
·Businesses will be expected to reduce their carbon output by 2% year on year
·There is only limited natural fossil fuels in the UK therefore UK is subject to controls from controls from other countries i.e. USA, Russia and The United Arab Emirates
·Other fuels are being developed (RDF & Miscanthus)
·Short rotation crops such as Willow grow readily in our climate and can be used to produce pellets suitable for energy production.
·The scientific principle behind biomass is the carbon cycle - as plants grow they absorb Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere to produce food. When the plant is burned the CO2 released is equivalent to that which is absorbed by the plant while it is growing.
· The contribution of biomass to the green house is therefore far less than for traditional fossil fuels.
As you can see there are a lot of good reasons to use Biomass.
Here at Total Floor Heating we do a large range of wood pellet boilers from 16Kw to 116Kw sized to suit your need. The boilers are self cleaning which means that they clean the ash into a small box at the front of the boiler which has to be emptied very rarely. The boiler has several different safety features to insure maximum safety at all times. The design of the boiler utilises smoke tubes to increase the performance and ensure maximum heat is extracted from the fuel. All of our boilers come with a 2 year guarantee and have been produced and tested to international quality standard ISO9001:2000.
What is in wood pellets?
Wood pellets are usually made from compressed sawdust and wood shavings. However, they can be made from most biomass material (e.g. straw, forestry residues, specially grown energy crops etc.) and hence have the potential to be sourced from locally unused material, which can then give considerable benefit to the local economy.Pellets are typically 6-10mm in diameter depending on the size of the heating system) and resemble animal feed. In fact the manufacturing process is similar in many ways. A pellet production facility will traditionally be a large production facility producing tens of thousands of tonnes per year such as at Balcas, Northern Ireland. However, new technology is becoming available to enable wood pellet production on a smaller scale (hundreds to a few thousand tonnes per year).
